"Himself" is reflexive, HE needs to be BOTH the subject and the object to use "himself." Because the wife ("she who had done...") is the subject, "him" is correct usage.

I know you would like anarchy on the streets, orgies galore, but we live in a society with rules so that we don't destroy ourselves. That includes conventions about marriage and relationships. Unlike you suppose, most men are not motivated by hatred of women. We just have expectations of ourselves and our spouses based on the agreements we've entered into.
